This item received 4 stars overall. Cutesy but a keeper

My oldest child's reaction (he is seven) upon seeing this board book for the first time was, "Why does Jesus look like a little baby?"  (He was talking about the pictures of adult Jesus).  And his second reaction was, “Why does the angel have blue hair?”  I didn’t have an answer to either question.  And indeed the pictures in The Little Life of Jesus are cutesy.  They are not ugly, just…cutesy.  My initial reaction to anything that seems to talk down to children is to get rid of it.  That being said, for a board book meant for small children, this book has meat to it.  It tells the story of the life of Jesus (every major event) in an accessible way to the children, without pandering (that is, the book itself doesn’t pander, the pictures do).  This has become one that my s Full Review...

This item received 4 stars overall. Great gospel stories for preschoolers

Little Life of Jesus follows the life of Jesus from his birth to his death and resurrection in a cute storybook format. The pictures are bright and colorful, and the amount of text is good for the attention span of a preschooler. My 4.5 year old listens to the whole book attentively, and my 1.5 year old will pay attention to about 3 or 4 pages before losing interest. The text is biblically sound but I also think would be appealing to Christians of any denomination, so this is good not only for our Catholic families but also as gifts for our friends and relatives who belong to other denominations. The book goes more in depth on the details of crucifixion than we have so far with our son, so I skipped like two sentences on that page, but my son is pretty sensitive, so this may not be a problem at all for other families, and it's certainly not anything incorrect or inappropriate, just something I as Full Review...

This item received 4 stars overall. Marvelous first Gospel for Small Children

The Little Life of Jesus, published by Magnificat, text by Anne Gravier, illustrations by Adeline Avril, is a charming retelling of the life of Jesus for very young children.

This book held the attention of my 4 yr old who is active and not very cooperative about sitting still for stories. I see it best for toddlers, pre-school age children and slightly older children who are sensitive and not yet ready for the harsher elements in the gospel.  This is NOT a watered down version, but it is geared carefully for very young children.

The illustrations are bright and interesting and filled with happy faces communicating the gladness that comes from Christ.  The style of the art is soft, without any sharp angles, and made Jesus look marvelously hugable!  My children and I enjoyed the pictures very much.

The vocabulary used is very simple to avoid parents having to Full Review...

This item received 4 stars overall. Nice introduction to the life of Jesus for little ones

I've been a fan of the board books for toddlers and preschoolers from the Magnificat and Ignatius Press line of books for the past few years.  We have just about all of the Magnificat board books for our almost three year old and they've all been well loved by her, so I was pretty sure that Little Life of Jesus by Ann Gravier would likely be another great addition to the Magnificat line of books.

As with any picture book, the illustrations are just as important to the little ones as the words are to the parents reading the book.  Even the best story will fall flat if the pictures aren't interesting enough to captivate young children.  The illustrations in this book are beautiful.  They have a sweetness about them that remind me a bit of the Precious Moments drawings with more saturated colors and both adults and children rather than just little children.  I particularly Full Review...
